Low bandwidth websites

When bandwidth is restricted it will be important to be able to use sites that are not bandwidth heavy to get information. Many sites have PDA versions which may be suitable. As a starter for 10 I offer the following which may be of use. If this list is considered valuable we may wish to add to it and formalise it as a proper SA3 resource.

BBC News http://news.bbc.co.uk/low/english/pda/default.htm
CNN http://206.130.125.133/mobile.php?UMPG=index
MultiMap http://www.multimap.com/ipaq/
Weather http://mobile.wunderground.com/
Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.7val.com/wiki//
Yellow pages http://www.infospace.com/info.avant/yellow.html
White pages http://kevdb.infospace.com/_1_28UCTVI05OC5HH__info.avant/wp/index.htm
Pocket Wine List http://mobile.bbr.com/

Skweezer http://www.skweezer.net/ This site converts other sites to low bandwidth versions.

I like the Skweezer

Pete, I particularly like the Skweezer link. Are you planning on pre-loading these into the toolbar of the browser on a memory stick - as this would be a great part of a toolset. Same for links to common disaster new websites with low bandwidth versions such as

Reuter's alertnet (low graphics version) http://mobile.alertnet.org/?_lite_=1

and the reliefweb RSS feed http://www.reliefweb.int/rw/hlp.nsf/db900ByKey/Subscribe?OpenDocument

Which brings up another point - the RSS feeds are sometimes a ver low bandwidth way to access these sites, much simpler than the converted front pages.

So a good feed reader with a good set of subscriptiosn is an essential tool in any field software kit.

RSS News Reader on Toozl

I have put an RSS feed reader, called Sage, on Toozl as an extension to Portable Firefox. This is a well featured reader and, as it is an extension rather than a full program, is a small footprint. I have loaded some humanitarian RSS feeds onto this as part of the Toozl distribution but this was more by way of a demonstration. If there are better or additional feeds I can always add them.
